Liberia Report Day 4 – 2 July 2015

[su_frame][/su_frame]

We slept for an hour and got up for suhoor, prayed fajr and began distributing. We had over 400 Iftar food parcels to distribute in this area. People from Tenne and Bo waterside all arrived after Fajr to collect their food parcels. The list of those receiving parcels was made by the locals and our volunteers, to ensure that the most needy received the food parcels. The parcels had similar contents to the ones distributed in Barnesville. In this area we distributed over 600 food parcels and again it was the first time any UK charity has done a distribution of this kind in this area. The people were very happy to see us and were looking forward to their food parcels. We had people from two areas Tenne and Bo waterside to come to one distribution point. The atmosphere was electric.
Besides distrusting Iftar food parcels, we gathered all the children together and gave out a pack of biscuit to each child. As soon they saw us with the biscuits they all cheered loudly in joy, which was extremely pleasing. We finished distributing all the parcels at about 3pm.

Liberia Report Day 3 – 1 July 2015

Couldn’t sleep, as the Mosquitos were having a field day. It rained heavily all night and morning and we wanted to leave early to prepare for a distribution in Tenne, Bo waterside and Lombacor, but due to the roads it was difficult. The area is in Tawor, grand cape mount province, the people of all these 3 areas will be coming to the area off bo waterside and we will distribute to the people there. We went to an Internet cafe to try to do the e visa but the connection was too poor. We made our way to the wholesalers to help load up the truck which was making its way to grand Cape Mount County. We arrived in Bo waterside at approximately 5pm, but the truck was running late. We sat down with the locals and made mashwarah that we should do the distribution after fajr as we had to make the parcels during the night, after taraweeh salah. The truck arrived just before Iftar and after offloading the truck, it was approximately Eisha time. We prayed Eisha and taraweeh salah and then started to pack the parcels and we finished at about 3:00am.

Liberia Report Day 2 – 30 June 2015

[su_frame][/su_frame]

The food had arrived at the masjid where the distribution was taking place, in Barnesville. Brother Abdul Qadir (the imam of the masjid) had organised a number of volunteers, men and women, to help us pack the Iftar food parcels. The food parcels consisted of; a 25k bag of rice, 2 litres of oil, 2kg of fresh onions, 4kg of sugar, 3kg of corn flour, 3 large tins of mackerel, a 200g bag of salt, 20 sachets of tomato paste and 50 small blocks of Maggi cubes. We finished packing and distributing over 200 Iftar food parcels for this area by zuhr time. Alhamdulillah all went well with many smiling faces. The people could not believe that we came from a different part of the world to distribute the aid ourselves as opposed to giving all the aid to the local imam to distribute, as is normal in this part of the world. This was the first distribution of its kind in this area by any charity from the UK.

Liberia Report Day 1 – 29 June 2015

[su_frame][/su_frame]

We have arrived in Liberia at 4:30am. We closed our fast at the baggage collection area with a can of drink and a bottle of water. After having met our hosts at the airport, brother Sulayman and Shaykh Abdul Qadir, we made our way to our accommodation. Looking at the country it seemed like it’s very backwards and poor, which is not surprising having just come out of a 14 year civil war. Maulana Ebrahim, myself, brother Sulayman and shaykh Abdul Qadir sat down and made mashwarah regarding how will we be buy the food and where we will distribute it. Then we left to visit the wholesalers to buy the food items for the parcels. So we purchased the food and it turned out to be more expensive than we expected. In the meantime, the other volunteers, Molana Ilyas and Faizal Dhada sorted out all the clothing donated by the brothers and sisters in the UK. By the time we got back to our temporary home in Barnesville, Monrovia it was time for Iftar. We had frozen food packs from home but it was still frozen, so since time was very short we opened our fast with dates, water, a few packets of crisps and drinks. That was our food for the day. The area we are living in has no restaurants or takeaways, so we’re surviving off the food we had with us. The Mosquitos could smell us a mile away and they were in for a great time.
